Project Yamaha TTR230R: Reader Questions Answered

Dec. 19, 2008 By Rick Sieman

SUBJECT: UPGRADING THE FORKS

Just purchased a 2007 ttr 230 and want to upgrade the front forks. What years and makes will work for this with the least fabrication? Is there a set that will bolt right on? Brad Dover, PA

The forks we used on our project bike were from a 2000 YZ125 and cost $125 plus shipping on ebay. You can follow the step-at-a-time instructions in our series. No, there is no decent bolt on swap that we know of.

SUBJECT: WHERE TO GET THE ELUSIVE PILOT JET

Rick, Where did you get the infamous #38 pilot jet for the TTR230 mod? Seems to be an impossibility to get one. I`m trying to complete this mod and cannot find one. Thanks, Dennis Davison, MI

Actually, we got the jet at a Yamaha shop in San Diego. If you can't find a jet, you can contact Keith Lynas (klynas@aol.com) and he can modify the stock jet into a 38 for you, and do it right.

SUBJECT: TRIPLE CLAMP SPACER

Did you have to make a custom spacer for the YZ triple tree to fit the TTR 230. The frame neck on the TTR is about 6.5" and the YZ is about 8" tall. The pics on the dailing the forks project shows an alum. spacer I have not seen before. Please help. Thanks Tbone Blue Springs, MO

Yup, we made the spacer to take up the difference in length. It's not hard. Just find a section of thick walled tubing and cut it to length.

SUBJECT: TRIPLE TREE CONFUSION

Did you guys have to change the tripple trees along also? jc7c86 Oxford, NY

May I call you jc? Of course we had to change the triple clamps. They came with the forks.

SUBJECT: 428 VS 520 CHAIN FOR THE 230

Any thoughts on installing the Sidewinder Sprocket 520 to 428 conversion kit on the Yamaha TTR-230? Also, I can not find the exact Maxiss tires you recoment, have they (Maxiss) changed their discriptions? Doug Kalamazoo. MI

Yes. Don't do it. While I truly love the Sidewinder products, I don't like the idea of putting a mini-bike chain on a full-sized bike. Put 520 chain and a 520-sized sprocket on your 230 and you're set for a long time. The Maxxis tires we used are a standard size and you should check with a few dealers for availability. We used them on two bikes now and really like the performance and wear.
