7th Annual Crested Butte MSSR Snocross Wins the Prize for Snow Conditions

Cloudless Colorado skies greeted the over 80 competitors of the 7th Annual MSSR Snocross race in Crested Butte February 11th and 12th. The abundance of natural snow made for perfect conditions as snowmobiling athletes careened around tight corners and bounded off of crowd-pleasing aerials in a head-to-head snocross competition that had spectators on their feet from the start.

With categories for Masters (over 40), Beginner Stock, Pro Women, Semi-Pro Stock, Semi-Pro Performance, Semi-Pro Open, Sport Stock, Sport Performance, Sport Open, Sport Women, and four Junior divisions from 7 to 17, there was something in this Mountain States Snowmobile Race for everyone. Images your average audience might not expect were in full attendance ? pint sized competitors on miniature machines and a plethora of blond ponytails flying out from under the helmets of the women competitors.

With events succeeding each other in rapid fire, spectators barely had time to catch their breath before another division was on the course. With the entire track visible from the spectator viewing area, watching had to be as much fun as competing and locals were out in full force to cheer on the athletes that came to their town to race. The brilliance of Mt. Crested Butte, Mt. Emmons and a whole host of wild and woolly wildernesses served as the spectacular backdrop throughout.

Leon Olsen, placing first in the Semi-Pro Open division commented, "There's lots of good snow here. The jumps are bigger and there is more room to get in and pass. There is good rhythm and quick lines both inside and out."

Evie Hamilton, placing 2nd in the Sport Women division agreed, "This is the best track we've had this season. There is a lot of snow."

All motos in every division, except for the open, took place on Saturday, February 11th with the main events and open motos concluding on Sunday, February 12th. While Junior, Beginner and Sport divisions walked proudly with trophies, Semi-Pros and Pros went home a little richer with $1,000 going out to first place Semi-Pro male and $500 to Pro and Semi-Pro females.

Rae Ellen Hamilton, a mom and part of the "support team" for daughter Evie Hamilton concluded, "This was the most beautiful town we've gone too." In the end, everyone went home happy ? be it for a trophy, a cash prize, or just an impressive backdrop to cheer on your favorite snocross competitor.

"The scenery is spectacular," comments Phil Chamberland of Gunnison County Sno-trackers, "Other places have nice vistas but not jagged peaks. At Irwin you can see thirteen and fourteen thousand foot peaks covered in snow and three valleys to look into. People are inviting and friendly. There are things to do in the evening and those in your family who don't snowmobile can also ski or cross-country ski. The reason to come here is the rest of the resources, the opportunity to do hundreds of things."

THINKING OF RACING?

"The Beginner Class is for people who want to try it out and see if they want to get into racing," explains MSSR race organizer Phil Vallem. If you're thinking of giving snowmobile racing a whirl, Crested Butte, Colorado might be the perfect place to try. With the abundance of snow, you are assured spectacular conditions that are easier on your learning curve. Here's some tips from the pros:

  • Find a mentor to show you the ropes. You can pick up great tips about technique and racing from those who have gone before you. Don't be afraid to ask questions.
  • Learn to ride before you go big and don't go in over your head before you are ready. That's what the divisions are for ? to keep you in check with your abilities.
  • Corners are of particular concern ? practice them often.
  • Work on your endurance and upper body strength. These will help you stay on your machine and have better control of it. A training regimen is not out of the question if you're serious about it.

  • Let your hometown help you. This may be anything from a friendly snowmobile mechanic who helps you tune your sled to the neighbor who doesn't mind tagging along to make you some lunch. Most competitors have a huge support team.
  • Be mindful that traveling the circuit will keep you on the road most weekends. If you love your powder tracks in the mountains, or have a weekend job, the circuit may not be for you. Try a single race and see how it goes.
  • Remember the sport can be expensive. A mountain snowmobile is different from a track snowmobile. Those who are serious come with a trailer in tow to get out of the cold during competitions. These are all considerations.
  • For women ? don't be intimidated. Pro racers report that there is a lot of camaraderie in the women's divisions and that the men are very supportive as well.
