Reeds are a one-way valve located downstream from your carbs, mounted between the crankcase and cylinders. The motor pulls the air/fuel mixture from the carbs, through the reeds and into the case.

Magnus Stenman from Sweden sent us this picture of his '79 Ski Doo Elan, "Yellow Fever". Magnus says it is totally original with its 13hp engine and short track. He also said it was a funny sled to drive in the forests. ("Was" because he broke it.....)

Tim has been busy working on his sled this summer and it now includes the following mods: Shaved head, ported with raised port timing, installed UFOs and shorter carb boots, 501 rotary valve, twin Eliminator pipes, clutch work, new track with 192 studs, and a set of yellow flex skis.

Blake Schoenbeck says: After finally moving out of the city, I wanted to learn how to ride a snowmobile. Of course, I did not want to learn how to ride on a used sled, so my first purchase last year after moving to the wilds of Vermont was a 1999 Arctic Cat ZL 600 EFI. I have yet to ride another sled that can fly as smoothly as a my ZL through the tight VT trails. To this day, I don't know how I lived my first 23 years with out a sled. I'll be making up for that every chance I get!

Now that I?ve covered the basics, let me share some of my real experiences with you. I made up my mind from the beginning that I would buy a sled just for racing. I usually turn my trail sled over every year for a new one so I didn?t want to race that one. I chose to start racing with a 1997 Ski-Doo Mach1. This choice was based on:

I installed a Body By Northstar lightweight hood after seeing their products at a display in Grantsburg Wisconsin last summer at the watercross there. I was really impressed by their quality and light weight but what sold me was the high-quality finish and the color options. When I saw that I could get an Indy hood in Arctic Cat Purple, I knew right then I had to have one.

Another Polaris accessory that I highly recommend. This kit will allow you to extend you ski stance to a little over 40 inches and includes "beefier" components, including a stiffer swaybar. When installed on older, narrower- stance Indys, it will yeild a vast handling improvement. It's not a terribly easy kit to install, mainly because of the location of the inner radius rod bolts, but it's not a killer by any stretch of the imagination.
