Photographers recently captured images of a 2019 Ford Ranger prototype performing some high-altitude testing in Colorado. These are the first images we’ve seen of Ford’s mid-sized truck testing in the U.S. since earlier this year.

Spotted at altitude in Colorado, Ford is testing the US-bound Ranger leading up to its reintroduction to the states in 2019. We’re still unclear on whether the reintroduced Ranger will look like the Ranger sold globally now or if the truck will be tweaked somewhat prior its unveil next year.

The North American version may wear its own unique styling, as the ASEAN markets that most mid-size pickups are developed for seem to prefer more aerodynamic, car-like styling for their pickups.

We expect a full complement of Ecoboost engines in four- and six-cylinder options, and we wouldn’t rule out a small diesel option as well. Ford might use the direct injected twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 as the premium choice, and we expect that Ford's new ten-speed automatic, co-developed with GM, will be mated to the engine.

We also expect two-wheel drive to be standard, with part-time four-wheel drive available as an option. The Ranger should be unveiled sometime in 2018.
