3 Times a Charm? Chevy Colorado ZR2 Captured Again Testing

Although nothing is certain when it comes to seeing prototypes caught during testing, this is now the third time we’ve seen the Chevy Colorado ZR2 captured testing, leaving us to believe it’s likely going to be produced.

The ZR2 was captured by photographers yet again while testing on the GM Proving Grounds in Michigan. In recent weeks, we have already seen both an extended cab version and a crew cab model testing. Maybe third time is a charm, as this most recent capture of the truck during testing leads us to believe Chevy is serious about creating it.

With Toyota making the announcement that it will offer a Tacoma TRD Pro version in 2017, hopefully Chevrolet is ramping up a similar timeframe for the ZR2 - a truck that would directly compete with the TRD Pro. The ZR2 concept we first saw in 2014 was fitted with the 2.8L Duramax diesel currently offered in the Colorado and Canyon, but we don’t know what ending is powering the ZR2 concepts we’ve seen. We also know the ZR2 offered roughly a 2-inch lift and much more aggressive off-road suspension in the form of King remote-reservoir coil overs.

What we can tell in the images is that the ZR2 test units appear to be using the same bulging hood scoop found on the concept unveiled at the LA Auto Show in 2014. The additional trim in the wheel arches is also found on the ZR2 testers, which we think would match the first prototype’s extra four-inch width. It also appears this most recent test truck features the rocker guards installed on the side for off-road protection.

Hopefully it’s just a waiting game at this point, as we wait to see if Chevrolet makes an announcement at some point regarding the ZR2 being produced. We’re keeping our fingers crossed.
