GM Reportedly Building Aggressive Off-Road Chevrolet Colorado

Jul. 23, 2014 By Josh Burns
If Chevrolet produces an aggressive off-road Colorado, will it be based on its Colorado Rally Concept (shown)?

When Ford made the gamble to launch its SVT Ford Raptor, it was exactly that – a gamble. Sure, they hoped it would click within the off-road market, but even Ford didn’t expect such widespread success. Now, every time an off-road truck or upgrade package hits the market, it’s quickly compared to the Raptor, including the Ram Runner, Toyota TRD PRO Tundra, and it appears we may add Chevrolet to the list – though it might not be the direction comparison some would think.

Chevrolet's Colorado Rally Concept

Although there are no formal announcements from General Motors regarding a seriously equipped off-road truck, according to General Motor enthusiast blog GM Authority there could be a more hard-core off-road truck offered from the company in 2016 – but it’s not the Silverado or the Sierra, as the report says it would be based on the new Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon model. According to GM Authority’s sources, it appears there is an “aggressive off-road variant equal to that of the Ford Raptor, but in a small (read: lighter) package.” GM Authority also hints that this potential new model could bring back the ZR2 name on the truck. There is no confirmation from GM on such a model, but the story goes on to suggest it might possibly look like the Chevrolet Colorado Rally Concept.

2015 Chevrolet Colorado Z71

It makes sense for GM to offer an aggressive off-road package based on its new mid-size pickup platform, especially when you consider the fact that it’s not trying to compete directly with the Raptor in the full-size market but will instead cater to a different buyer.

Chevy's new mid-sized Colorado will feature a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder motor.

With the off-road being rumored as a 2016 model, it’ll be a little while before we have any clarification. But truck lovers won’t have to wait too much longer for the new 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, as they are said to be available in the fall of 2014. The truck will offer two engine options, including a 2.5-liter I-4 motor, with an optional 3.6-liter V-6. GM says that the truck, when properly equipped, will offering class-leading payload capacity and a towing capacity exceeding 6,700 pounds. The Colorado will be offered in WT, LT and Z71 trim levels with 2WD or 4WD options, with off-roaders probably being most drawn to the Z71 that features a unique gunmetal grille surround, projector headlamps and unique 17-inch wheels.
